mypStockholm International School uses the International Baccalaureate ‘Middle Years Programme’ (MYP) as the curriculum framework for the Secondary School. The MYP is a five year programme designed to prepare students for the IB Diploma Programme. The Secondary school comprises of;

  • Middle Years Programme - Grades 6-10
  • Diploma Programme - Grades 11-12

The MYP provides an academic challenge within the framework of a holistic curriculum. The curriculum includes eight subjects. The offerings at SIS are;

  • Mathematics, (also extended math in Grade 9, 10)
  • Science,
  • Arts (Music, Visual Arts and Drama),
  • Individuals and Societies,
  • Language and Literature (English, Swedish and EAL)
  • Language Acquisition (Swedish, Spanish, French and English),
  • Design (Product design and digital design)
  • Physical and Health Education.

Subjects require a minimum of 50 hours instruction. At SIS, this requirement is easily met with students receiving 3 or 4 lessons per subject per week. Each subject curriculum is divided into Units of work. These can vary in length.  Cross-curricular links are created through interdisciplinary Units involving two or more subject areas.

The MYP uses concepts, rather than skills or knowledge, as the basis for the Units of work.

‘ MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine knowledge holistically. The MYP prescribes sixteen key interdisciplinary concepts along with related concepts for each discipline’ - IBO website information, 2015.

Assessment and grading are according to the set of assessment criteria for each subject published by the International Baccalaureate (IB). (see also the SIS Assessment policy)  Assessment is ongoing and at the completion of a Unit of work. Grades are issued mid-year and at the completion of the school academic year. Grades from 1 (lowest) and 7 (highest) are awarded to the students, for each subject and for the personal project (in Grade 10), according to predefined grade boundaries based on the levels students have achieved.

Service as Action is an integral part of the MYP. ‘Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service - making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment’  - IBO website information, 2015.
